Praia - 14 August - The Minister of Health, Cristina Fontes, today confirmed that a ship from Sierra Leone, one of the countries affected by the Ebola virus is in quarantine near the islet of Pássaros in São Vicente.
The news was released today by the newspaper A Nação which said that the Chinese ship left Sierra Leone on 31st July and is off the Port since last week.
"The boat came out less than 21 days from the port in question, and in this case we put it in quarantine to make sure that all is well. The boat has been visited by health authorities, it was confirmed that there was no one with symptoms, but will be quarantined until completing the 21 days so there is no risk", said the minister.
Cristina Fontes reaffirm the country's decision of not closing the borders with Africa, explaining that in case of risk, the archipelago needs this connection.
"Right now we do not talk of closing the border. First because WHO does not recommend but also because we need to have an anchor. Reference laboratories to confirm cases of Ebola are in Dakar, if we need, we have to go there. The devices will also come quickly in Africa, an archipelago country has to weigh this decision. But we have the sovereign ability to make other decisions in terms of risk assessment", she said.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Marisa Morais, and the holder for Health, Cristina Fontes Lima, were this Thursday having a training on Ebola for National Police officers.
The ceremony takes place at the National Training Centre of the National Police, in Praia.
The course will be taught by experts from the Ministry of Health and aims to empower agents of the National Police Command, the tax-Guard, Border and Maritime Police, on the Ebola virus, its symptoms, and methods of transmission and how to prevent this disease that kills.

Um navio proveniente de Serra Leoa, um dos países afectados pelo vírus do ébola que já matou mais de mil pessoas em África, está de quarentena perto do ilhéu dos Pássaros, em São Vicente. A medida foi decretada pelas autoridades sanitárias do país como forma de prevenção à entrada desse mortífero vírus.
O navio, de bandeira chinesa, chegou a São Vicente no passado dia 5 de Agosto e recebeu a visita não só das autoridades marítimas, como de uma equipa da Delegacia de Saúde que fez a abordagem inspectiva. Na sequência, decretou-se a quarentena de 21 dias, tempo máximo de incubação do vírus, a contar da data da saída da embarcação da Serra Leoa. Ou seja, desde o dia 31 de Julho até 21 de Agosto próximo.
Embora não se tenha detectado nada de anormal no navio, segundo uma fonte do Ministério de Saúde, a medida faz parte do pacote de prevenção e vigilância nos portos e aeroportos de Cabo Verde. Isso num momento em que, como informa a Agência de Notícias do Senegal, registou-se no último sábado em Uro a Tampa, cidade no norte do país, uma pessoa suspeita de estar infectada com o vírus e, dada a proximidade com aquele país, os cuidados devem ser redobrados para impedir que o mesmo chegue a Cabo Verde.
EPIDEMIA
A África Ocidental está a braços com o surto do ébola mais perigoso de sempre, que está longe de estar controlado. Aliás, a epidemia alastra-se a um ritmo tal que a Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) decidiu permitir tratamentos "não homologados", ?sob a reserva de que determinadas condições sejam cumpridas".
